I know Kohana has it and I know I always coded this and it’s a pain in the ass. I wonder if the yii team ever had this into consideration for building an extension which ties together some of the most important payment gateways.

Yes, we are thinking to integrate it in zii but we don’t know when yet.
There is an extension that supports lots of payments out of the box. Also It gives solution for other payment related problems. Like storages or security.
