Tabular Input - sample code?

Can someone write up a sample snippet (that works) for tabular input? Yes, I searched and found the article & extension but I can’t get either of those to work.

Can someone give me a simple -different- sample code?

I was mainly having trouble with the

$items=$this->getItemsToUpdate();
