Does anyone know when release 2.0 is coming?

Our next major release Yii 2.0 will be a complete rewrite of the framework on top of PHP 5.3.0+. It will not be fully compatible with 1.1.x. However, we will try every effort to make the transition as easy as possible.
Note: We are currently actively developing Yii 2.0. The earliest possible 2.0 alpha release may be in December 2011, but we cannot guarantee it.

Will you still maintain the 1.1.x series? On shared hosts, we don't really have control over which PHP version we have to deal with. Mine seems stuck to 5.1.x.
By the way, I am a total newbie to Yii and I have been all over the web site, documentation sections and forum, reading and learning. I sincerely thank you for what you are giving us.
I'm sure I'll be back with some questions but the docs are so exhaustive...
Again, thank you very much for the hard work.

I would like to start with Yii 1.1.8, but after reading that 2.0 won't be compatible with 1.1. Will there be a migration process to 2.0? Or should we wait for 2.0 and then start making the website? Cheers.

Start with Yii 1.1.8 now - and don't worry about the potential upgrade in some point in the future.
You probably won't perform a major upgrade on an existing project anyway..
